Where awards come from
- Department of War contract announcements. Published every business day at 5 p.m. ET at war.gov for contract actions valued at $7.5 million or more. Our main source for defense awards.
- SAM.gov award notices, through the official Get Opportunities Public API operated by the U.S. General Services Administration.
- USAspending.gov, through its public API, for new contracts from civilian agencies. Defense data on USAspending is published with a delay of about 90 days, so defense awards come from the daily announcements instead.
Company revenue
Annual revenue comes from the SEC's free XBRL company data (10-K and 20-F filings). We use the latest full fiscal year and refresh it weekly.
How we match awards to stocks
We maintain a hand-checked list of 94 publicly traded companies that regularly win federal contracts, including their known subsidiaries (for example, Electric Boat and Bath Iron Works map to General Dynamics). An award is matched only when the winning entity's legal name begins with one of those names. We also name a few notable private companies, without a ticker. Everything else is shown as “Other”. See the full list.
How we rank awards
Each award gets a significance score from fixed rules: its size, its size relative to the company's revenue, whether the company is publicly traded, and its topic. Modifications and shared multiple-award ceilings score lower. No automated text generation is used; summaries are built from the record's structured fields.
